About

Revered Curtis Rivers is a Retired Elder In Full Connection.

Born in Charleston, South Carolina, Curtis grew up in Atlanta, Georgia, attending Atlanta public schools.

He earned a Bachelor of Arts from Georgia State University then earned his Masters of Divinity from Emory University’s Candler School of Theology.

Curtis served in the United States Army as an infantry officer following his ROTC commission and served with the 82d Airborne during the 1960s.

When he returned to the United States he entered the United Methodist ministry.

While at Faith United Methodist he, together with his wife Angela Gilreath Rivers, helped to grow Faith’s membership by cultivating a vibrant new group of Hispanic families new to the Jonesboro area, many of whom were from Brazil.

In 2004 Curtis retired and began working with at-risk kids in Cartersville, serving as Pastor-Emeritus at the Douglas Street UMC where his wife, Angela (Often Angelita to many hispanics), served as Senior Pastor.

Their child Keila, graduated from Berry college in Rome, Georgia, majoring in sociology.

Curtis and Angela sponsored other children, now grown, for extended periods of time, including: Veronica (now mother of Karina), Alex (now a sergeant in the Air Force), Jessy (graduate of Hong Kong University in International Law as her class valedictorian), and Suphanni (who graduated from University in Thailand).
